Welcome to Artstetten Castle!

Artstetten Castle – Franz Ferdinand Museum in Lower Austria

Artstetten Castle is a historic castle in Lower Austria, located near the famous Wachau Valley in the district of Melk. The castle was the former residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and today also serves as his final resting place.

Artstetten is closely connected with the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand – the event in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg were murdered, an event that triggered the outbreak of World War I.

Today, visitors can explore several highlights within the castle grounds:

  • the Archduke Franz Ferdinand Museum

  • the family crypt of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie

  • the historic private natural castle park

  • the castle shop

  • the castle café

The Franz Ferdinand Museum presents the life of the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, the history of his family, and the historical events that shaped Europe in the early 20th century.

A Historic Castle Still in Private Family Ownership

Artstetten Castle remains in the private ownership of the Hohenberg family, the direct descendants of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

By visiting the museum, the castle park, or the café, guests help support the preservation of this unique historical site and help ensure that Artstetten Castle remains accessible for future generations.

Today, the castle is a popular cultural and historical destination in Lower Austria and one of the few castles in Austria that is still privately owned by the descendants of its original family.
